One out of every two people has some form of pain that disrupts daily work and play. It doesn’t matter how you got your pain. It could be from an injury at work, a motor vehicle accident, a fall, post-surgery, sports, arthritis or other disease. Maybe you’ve been told that you’ll have to learn to live with your pain or that you are getting older. Well, you don’t have to suffer. Why not enjoy life and activities to their fullest.
Many pain sufferers use drugs that may help the pain, but pose significant risks to their long-term health, including stomach problems, stroke, cancer and heart disease. Even over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are in the same risk category as prescription drugs like Celebrex and Vioxx (now pulled from the market). Another downside of drugs is that they mask pain symptoms without addressing the underlying cause of your pain. There is no permanent solution. Fortunately, safe and effective natural medicines and natural therapies are available that provide acute pain relief and the possibility of full recovery without unwanted side effects.

THERE ARE MANY TREATMENT OPTIONS

Being an avid runner, I am used to piling on the miles every week. After developing plantar fasciitis this came to a halt in a hurry. This lasted almost a year of being unable to keep up my usual running schedule and trying the more “traditional” treatments. After a series of treatments from Dr. De Monte I am back running again and considering my annual marathon this fall. I also had a similar experience with a knee injury. Same injections and by the time my surgeon called nine months later for my first appointment, I was able to say, “I don’t need you anymore”. Very happy with the results I have received at the centre and would do again.

I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, a very painful heel injury. Any weight on my foot would bring on extreme pain. I tried everything from buying soft, well padded shoes to staying off my feet as much as possible. Nothing seemed to be working and the pain not only continued, but intensified. After four months of agony and frustration, I approached Dr. De Monte. After only two injections with Dr. De Monte, I noticed a great relief from the pain and after only six injections my foot was well on its way to being healed. What a difference it has made in my daily life. Thank you so much.

Billions of photons of light from a medical laser penetrate deep into your tissues where they are absorbed and turned into chemical energy. Your body uses this energy to regenerate new cells and heal injured tissues. The accelerated rate of cell regeneration produced by the newly absorbed chemical energy provides faster recovery times. Laser therapy has been proven in over 2,000 published clinical studies world-wide and continues to be at the leading edge of modern medicine for pain relief. Rather than masking the pain, the laser has the unique ability to heal injuries at the cellular level and accelerate the natural healing cycle. Laser therapy has many applications including arthritis, sprains and strains, tennis and golfer’s elbow, and back, knee and shoulder pain. There are better post surgical outcomes when used before and after surgery.
Dr. De Monte’s laser treatments are painless, safe and very effective with a success rate often greater than 90%. We use the same medical laser used by national sports teams, Olympic training centres and professional sports teams. These high performance athletes are in the business of winning and have to rebound from injuries as quickly as possible. Now you can take advantage of the same treatments.

Massage and injections had no effect on my painful right shoulder, but laser treatment worked wonders, and I soon recovered full use of my right arm. I cannot speak highly enough of ALL the staff at the De Monte Centre Natural Medicine.

I had an injury and within 2 weeks my severe pain was gone following laser treatment. I recommend it highly for pain. The services and staff at the De Monte Centre Natural Medicine are excellent.

Dr. Spearman provides flexion-distraction treatment for leg and back pain. Developed by Dr. James Cox, D.C., in the 1970’s, the technique has been refined over the past 40 years. Your spine is stretched (distraction) and then while stretched it is moved (flexion). The stretching motions help reduce muscle spasms and increase blood flow to the treated areas, speeding recovery time. Disc height is increased to remove pressure on disc and nerve roots. Joints between vertebrae regain motion. It decompresses the spine and removes pressure on the vertebral disc. Treatment can restore range of motion to your spine and re-align the vertebrae. While results vary from patient to patient, it is a conservative treatment for back and leg pain, and an alternative to explore before surgery. Here are some of the many conditions that benefit:

Flexion-distraction uses a table with moveable segments. You lie face down on the table and the doctor gently stretches your spine with slow, careful movements. You will feel like you are being stretched out in the middle. Then the lower half of your body is moved down and up, to each side and sometimes even in a circular motion. While there is no guarantee of a specific outcome, patients report resolution of joint and disc problems.
After waking up for four months and having to take pain medications at least two times throughout the night for my back pain, I decided to try the De Monte Centre. The Flexion-Distraction treatment I received from Dr. Tara Spearman has allowed me to sleep through the night again and I no longer need the pain medications. Thank you.

Dr. Spearman uses Kaufmann Technique for soft tissue and trigger point pain. Pain is frequently due to the continual contraction of a muscle or set of muscles. It’s like a muscle cramp that just doesn’t go away. Kaufmann technique works to relax these muscles, thereby removing the source of pain. The basis for the technique is that when a muscle contracts, it has an opposing muscle that relaxes. For example, when you contract (flex) your bicep muscle on the front of your arm, your tricep muscle on the back of your arm relaxes. This happens automatically. When you are in pain, however, the opposing muscle does not relax; it continues to contract causing pain. The doctor stimulates neurological receptors in the opposing muscle that is contracting, while at the same time applying a bit of pressure to the painful area. Your nervous system then releases the contracted muscle and the pain subsides
Neck pain, sciatica, lumbar and cervical disc,
headache, low back pain and more all benefit!
I have had pain at the point of my hip bone for over ten years, and after one treatment it stopped. Amazing! Dr. Spearman used the “Kaufmann Technique” which was very gentle and didn’t hurt. I am completely impressed.

Dr. De Monte uses acupuncture primarily for headaches, sciatica, neck and back pain. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, and there are a couple of explanations how it works. The first is that channels of energy called meridians flow like rivers in regular patterns throughout your body nourishing tissues with energy. When there is an obstruction in the flow of energy, it is comparable to a dam across a river that stops the flow of water. This interference with energy flow leads to pain and illness. Needles are inserted to unblock the obstructions and re-establish the regular flow through the meridians. The second more scientific explanation is that acupuncture points stimulate your nervous system to release chemicals in your muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals trigger the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that balance body chemistry, improve energy and decrease your sensation of pain.
Very thin, stainless steel needles are inserted at very specific points on your body. Acupuncture can provide significant pain relief with minimal discomfort. And if you don’t like needles, a hand held laser is placed over the acupuncture point, emitting a small beam of light to stimulate the area.
During the day my back didn’t bother me, but after lying in bed for an hour, my lower back would begin to ache. I tried different mattresses, different sleeping positions, hot water bottles, pain medication, between the knee pillow rests and special exercises. Nothing seemed to work for any length of time. I was becoming exhausted from lack of sleep. Dr. De Monte applied Laser Therapy combined with Acupuncture. Within a few treatments, I noted a vast change and within a few weeks my back pain was gone. Three years later I still have no back pain. I cannot express how much I appreciated the caring and meticulous treatment that I received from Dr. De Monte.

Our medical grade infrared heat sauna generates soft radiant heat using ceramic heaters, the same type of heat produced by the sun and our bodies, and used by hospitals to warm pre-mature babies. There is no water or steam. This relaxing therapy increases circulation, reduces stress and decreases pain. The radiant heat penetrates one to two inches beneath your skin. It is easily absorbed by your body to relieve chronic pain, arthritis, bursitis, fibromyalgia, backache, sprains, strains, migraines and chronic muscle spasms.

Dr. De Monte uses several powerful natural pain medicines produced from plants and other nutrients. For example, one of the most effective is pure MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), an organic form of sulfur. Dr. Stanley Jacob, M.D., a former surgeon at Harvard who is considered the world’s foremost expert on MSM, has used it successfully with over 18,000 patients in his practice for the last 25 years. It has worked wonders for people suffering from any type of pain, particularly muscle and joint pain. Patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis benefit significantly. If you are an aging weekend warrior who still goes out for all manner of recreation and sports, then MSM can be your fountain of youth. Dosages are usually very high and require monitoring by a physician. Natural pain medicines provide pain relief without the health risks associated with prescription drugs.

If you’ve been in an accident or sustained an injury, a physical examination and x-rays can often readily identify why you hurt. But for many pain sufferers, particularly when there has been no obvious trigger that initiated the pain, or when the pain becomes chronic, determining the underlying cause is important for treatment. Pain is also exacerbated when there are complicating factors that can promote and prolong pain. Dr. De Monte identifies the little known and hidden causes of pain that often need to be addressed so that your pain can be reduced as quickly as possible and eliminated for good. Here are a few common causes:
Dr. Denise De Monte, M.A., N.D.
Naturopathic Physician

Dr. De Monte has been successfully treating pain with natural medicines and therapies for over a decade. While there is a time and place for drugs and surgery, most patients can get relief with natural options. For example, instead of a cortisone shot, natural German medicines are injected. They have no side effects or long term health risks. In addition to injection therapy, Dr. De Monte also uses laser therapy, acupuncture and natural oral medicines. Not all pain will resolve, however, until the underlying cause is identified and corrected. This is especially important if you still have pain from an injury that should have healed years ago. A lot of patients are surprised to discover that their pain stems from seemingly unrelated and hidden causes such as food allergies, compromised digestion, heavy metal toxicity, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and hormone imbalances. Dr. De Monte works to determine the cause of your pain and fix it permanently.
Dr. Tara Spearman, B.Sc., D.C.
Chiropratic Physician

Dr. Spearman has been treating pain for over 10 years. Born and raised in B.C., she attended the University of Victoria and the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Biology and Doctorate in Chiropractic. Three years in Family Practice Residency completed her 10 years of post secondary education. In addition, Dr. Spearman has training in Flexion-Distraction and Kaufmann Technique, the two main therapies she uses to treat pain. These two techniques allow her to treat her patients with a combination of joint manipulation and soft tissue relief.
